The Love Prescription: 7 Days to More Intimacy, Connection and Joy
The Gottman books have made a profound impact on our marriage. A Gottman book was first recommended to me (Claire) by my physiotherapist. James and I were running into roadblocks in our marriage, so we took that book along on our cruise to Alaska, and we started our journey. This book spring-boarded us to Gottman’s marital workshops, and those workshops made a massive difference for us. I distinctly remember the day I thought, “You mean there are tools to use in a marriage? Why didn’t we know this?” John and Julie Gottman did many studies on couples, following them for up to twenty years. They also studied couples in their “marriage lab” where they were able to “predict” marital satisfaction almost perfectly through physiological measures, such as heart rate, blood velocity, and skin conductance. They observed the habits of couples, and identified and codified the traits present in couples who were predicted not to make it. The seven principles in this book revolutionized the way we understand and strengthen our marriage. There is a science to love and as you do the practices in this book, it will begin to change the way you feel about your connection. Gottman’s insights can also be applied to all kinds of relationships: with parents, with co-workers, with any of the people we rub shoulders with every day.
