Restoring the Soul #142: Less Is More
Michael John Cusick describes himself as a wounded healer. He is also a psychotherapist, spiritual director and professor. This episode of his podcast features his speech at Denver Seminary. This talk was like water to my (Claire’s) soul.
Cusick suggests some paradigm shifts for us. We often think the goal of life is “to glorify God.” Cusick proposes that the goal of life is one-ness with God, union with Him. And that union is not something that we work up, but rather God comes to us, to reside in us.
We become grounded in union with God by being attentive, first of all, to our inner life. We pay attention to our pain, loss, grief, and thirst for significance and security. The depth of our relationship with God is directly correlated to the depth at which we enter into our own souls. Secondly, we become grounded in union with God by paying attention to the heart of God. We become aware of the lie that He can’t be trusted, and we see that He is better than we could have ever imagined. This is the reversal of all things lost. This is what brings us to a state of rest, where we can exhale, and really live.
