The documentary Buck is one of James and my (Claire’s) favourite guides for relating to humans, and especially to children. It is the stunning account of Buck’s life, from an abusive childhood to a phenomenally successful career with horses.

A real-life “horse whisperer,” Buck possesses near magical abilities to transform horses – and people – with his understanding, compassion, and respect. At its heart, this rich and rewarding documentary is a road map for living a harmonious and honourable existence with other humans, a beautiful portrayal of the essence of good relationship. James and I quote often from this movie when we are trying to figure out how to relate to a child.

Buck says, “I started to realize that things would come much easier for me once I learned why a horse does what he does. This method works well for me because of the kinship that develops between horse and rider.” This kinship has huge implications for how we parent, and how we relate to people in general. The documentary is available to buy on Amazon or to rent on Amazon Prime.
