The Place We Find Ourselves #159: Revisiting the Big Six: What You Needed From Your Parents
In this episode, Adam Young makes the claim that you need to feel your story and not escape it. He then says something that takes my (James’s) breath away. “The single greatest gift you can give to your children is to think deeply about what it was like for you as a child, in other words, to make sense of your own developmental story. The neuroscience research has demonstrated that if you want to improve your parenting, the number one thing you can do has nothing to do with interacting differently with your children. The number one thing you can do to improve your parenting is to engage your family of origin story when you were a boy or a girl and make sense of your life experiences.”
Young then shares the six big factors that lead to healthy brains and healthy relationships that your parents gave you or didn’t give you. Each comes with a vignette from Young’s own life to make it easy to determine whether you got that thing in your own childhood. This episode is extremely informative. I recommend it to everyone!
